The Aromatic Plant Power for Prevention project
According to the World Health Organization, vector-borne diseases account for more than 17% of all infectious diseases, causing nearly a million deaths per year globally. The United Republic of Tanzania experiences 4% of Malaria deaths globally. [1] The Aromatic Plant Power for Prevention Project mitigates the problem of vector mosquitoes through the cultivation of insecticidal aromatic plant ingredients such as Pyrethrum, Patchouli, Lemongrass and Artemisia.
Utilizing our network of Tanzanian women’s groups we will scale the production of insecticidal kits with personal, household and crop protection, including education and seeds, to communities all over Tanzania with the goal of reaching 1,000,000 households (5,000,000) Tanzanians 13% of its population.
The Aromatic Plant Power for Prevention Kit includes seeds, sprays, travel roll-ons, oils, nets & diffusing devices that are formulated with science and evidence backed aromatic plant ingredients proven to be effective insecticides and pesticides. The goal is to build a layer of protection around communities through personal care and farm care practices that integrate mosquito-repelling organic compounds into the lifestyles of local villagers on a daily basis thus lowering the risk of penetration and ultimately disease contraction.
By mobilizing and empowering 1333 women’s groups with 1 acre of land each, we are vastly increasing the opportunities for communities to sustain livable wages as well business growth through local farming and production. We are educating communities on the importance of prevention as well as how to economically benefit from cultivating aromatic plants.
